We would like to consider using an open system
I need suggestions to create a system to monitor energy usage that will enable user to track usage of individual appliances over time such as Geothermal with aux electric heat, HVAC blowers, electric car, etc
Home is in US and has 2 main panels total of 400 AMP. I would like to know what components we need
Re: New System
Welcome, David.
We would like you to use an open system too, and better still if you support the site and purchase kits and parts from the shop, but with such a general question as yours, it's almost impossible to answer in any detail. Take a look round the site, particularly the OEM Guide page at the top of the navigation bar, and look what's on sale in the shop. We know of a supplier of larger c.t's than our standard 100 A one, so that should not be a problem.
In general, to monitor energy you need to know power, and to calculate that you need to measure voltage and current. The systems here are designed for the UK single phase supply, if yours is different you'll need to adapt the design, as many others have done in the past and you'll find plenty in the forums about using the emon system with the American mains supply. If you need to know the energy consumption of individual appliances, then you need to measure each. Progress is being made on "appliance inference" whereby the signature of each appliance is recognised, but as far as I'm aware no-one has achieved a practical system yet.
