Making a living from the Open Energy Monitor?

Hi energy enthusiasts,

I know the title of the topic is appealing and probably i am not the first one wondering about it. So welcome everybody who wants to think about this with me.

I am a software developer that has being in contact with OEM for a long time. I haven't done many contributions to it but recently i had the great opportunity to work (yes for money) developing a module to visually program rules, it was exciting but not very useful yet.

Anyway, i have been thinking lots about it and have a couple of ideas that could work for making a living. I want a switch for my professional career and OEM fulfills me in so many ways....

So if you are in a similar situation than me and would like to discuss ideas, please let me know. I was thinking about organizing a small meeting in a big city to make it possible for people to attend, maybe end of october?

Just in case anybody wonders, I am serious about this one ;-)

All the best,

   Carlos

Hi Carlos,

I have started customizing OEM systems for electricians here in California.  I'm not much of a coder however, I'm just working with what is available an buying parts from the OEM shop.

Here's a 3-phase dashboard example:

Sergegsx:  Thank you!

So Carlos, what are you thinking about this?  Are you looking for custom programming gigs?  Looking to fork OEM into a commercialized branch?  Develop 3 phase UL / CE / 480V hardware?  Get "revenue grade" certification?

Every energy monitor designed for commercial use (not home use) charges a per-month fee.  I personally avoid per-month fees wherever I can, so OEM/emoncms is a good fit for my business model because I want to sell what I would buy myself:  hardware and installation, with no monthly fees.  However, the costs have to be recouped somewhere... I'm curious as to what you have in mind.

Hi JD,

Sorry i didn't say anything about your previous post, thanks for getting involved in the conversation :)

I am not a expert in electronics, can do firmware.... My main skill is software development and it is this field where i think i could find work to do. I am thinking approaching the industry and offer to interface their system with emonCMS. Probably in any project there would be some electronics to do. Ideally an electronic geek would get involved too so there is more to offer.

I'm thinking I could do local supply, installs & software development (custom or otherwise).

I just purchased an emonPi to evaluate the possibility of working in this field.  I'm getting a Solar PV system installed next week, so it will give me a chance to explore the possibilities.

However, without CE certification, this is a non-starter.  I would have to get the hardware manufactured myself, and certify it myself.  And if I am going to go to that expense, I have a few changes in mind, to make installs easier.  I just wouldn't have the buying power to keep the hardware competitive.
