I've been reading about the ERT wireless format, which was developed by Itron in the 80s and widely used in US residential markets. The format is described in (expired) patents and should be readable by 900MHz AM receiver such as TI's CC1101.
I've been working on a project to receive and decode ERT packets but I've run into some roadblocks, mainly because I'm not a wireless expert. If anyone is interested in this and has some RF expertise (or even better, experience with the CC1101) I'd love to share what I've got and finally get the project working.
End goal is to release everything under an open source license, specifically GPL for code portions.
