I have had a good look at the documentation and here and have a few questions before attempting to upgrade from an old version (6 or 7) to 8. I am pretty sure it is using timestore as I remember doing that a while back. The original was the HDD img and I have a number of other things set up on the pi so I do not want to start from scratch. I have taken a clone of the disk so do have a degree of a safety net.
Firstly how do I disable any writing to the database while this is going on. There is a warning in the backup documentation to do so, but not how.
Secondly, looking at the directories to backup, I do not have a /var/lib/phpfiwa or /var/lib/phpfina. I can find /var/lib/phptimeseries and /var/lib/timestore. If the version I have is old enough not to have those directories, is there something else that I need to backup?
Finally, I am guessing that the entry in the crontab needs to be removed earlier in the process to avoid conflicts, but how is the 'newer daemon' installed?
That is all I can find for now :)
Re: Upgrading from old version
Can no one help?
Re: Upgrading from old version
I presume that you are reading this guide.
When I changed to v8 I decided to start afresh, as I had feeds stored in so many different formats, having started with emoncms at it's first beta version, so I deleted the lot!
But in the absence of other comments, I would suggest that you give it a go following that guide, as you have a clone of your installation if it all goes wrong.

I have upgraded several times now and have never stopped writing to the database.
Secondly, looking at the directories to backup...
You have a clone of your installation, it's up to you, but I wouldn't bother!
I am guessing that the entry in the crontab needs to be removed...
I never have.
Possibly not the scientific answer that you were seeking, but I don't think that you will go far wrong.
