That is very slick if it works as well as the promo videos suggests.  I wonder how you train it.  There were some people in here working on appliance signature recognition a while back... not sure how far that progressed.

[EDIT] If you dig down to the Installation Manual, it shows the various options for recording the signatures of individual appliances.

Such a "smart plug" might be a good idea for OEM as well: it wouldn't only be able to turn a device on or off, but maybe also monitor it individually and stream that data to emonBase.

I love how Americans aren't afraid to have a crack at it themselves, with little more than a "be careful not to touch those two fat screws down the bottom".

Seriously though, you're right, where their take on safety is concerned. It could have been a LOT better.

At 249 bucks a pop, it should have been better!

I had so much trouble and frustration with all aspects of the Smappee product, I removed it and sent it packing.  In the brief time I've had the Neurio, I am already convinced it's the far better choice in every respect.  If anyone wants details, send me a message.

Personally, I like the looks and flexibility of OpenEnergyMonitor over Smappee or Neurio, but one thing I'd say I like about the looks of Neurio is the fact that it can apparently monitor both legs of US 120/240V service. Yes, in theory, both legs should be real close to each other, but for ultimate accuracy, it would be great to be able for OEM to be able to monitor both legs in teh event of an unbalanced load either in the homes panel or at the providers transformer that could result in a voltage drop. Not EXACTLY how it would be done, but maybe a US 220v outlet which usually of both 110/120v legs and neutral and/or ground (which in many cases, neutral and ground are tied together in the breaker panel)?

Funny thing about their video is as I understand it, there is no such thing as 2-phase power - only either 240v as in the UK and other places and two leg 120v as in the US, both single phase, and three phase power.
