Phase Angle Calibration

I've searched the forums and can't find anything on this. Where exactly am I supposed to measure the real power/apparent power to calculate the phase angle calibration number? Would this be on the mains (I'm in the US)? Can I measure between the AC-AC adapter? Thanks and sorry if this has been answered elsewhere.
