No-one should attempt to construct any device that has a direct connection to the mains supply unless they are fully conversant with the safety requirements in their country. Just because "it works" does not mean that it is necessarily safe under all conditions. That link shows how to do it safely. [And in case you are wondering, RobP is like me a Chartered Electrical Engineer.]
