Use Pi without RFM12P or emonTx?

I would like to use my Pi to only monitor my meter (pulse counting) and it is possible for me to locate my Pi at the meter so I don't require wireless transfer of data. Has anyone tried to feed data directly to the Pi without RFM12Pi.
