EmonPi Voltage Calibration - Newbie

Hi all,

Ive taken the plunge and bought a EmonPi, though I am having problems understanding the guides to get started.

Im trying to calibrate the voltage adaptor but looking at the guide https://openenergymonitor.org/emon/buildingblocks/calibration the guide does not reference where a config files needs modifying and does not reference the code needed for the EmonPi.

Does this need to be edited by SSH or can you use the embedded webserver? if using the webserver, is tehre a reload configuration to restart the services?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I just cant seem to get the voltage adjusted.

Regards,

Dave

That guide was written before the emonPi was introduced. I'm afraid it's not as simple as editing and reloading a config file. You need to (either on the Raspberry or externally) edit the sketch with the new coefficients, recompile it and then load the compiled .hex file serially via the Raspberry into the emonTx. The instructions for the last part are in the emonPi Wiki.

Re: EmonPi Voltage Calibration - Newbie

HI,

I've got an emonpi that I got via the kickstarter last year.

If I start from scratch with the latest version, will I have to calibrate the voltage adaptor too?

I'm using a third party one as I thought the emonpi would use a standard micro USB power, but needs a different psu for the voltage.

How far out will the figures be if we don't calibrate?

Re: EmonPi Voltage Calibration - Newbie

If you don't use the 'shop' adapter, what your Pi will read is anyone's guess. The out-of-the-box calibration depends on the no-load output voltage of the ac adapter, which we know for the 'shop' Ideal/TDC adapter (and it's not 9 V - that's the output on full load) but which we won't know for any other adapter. If your adapter happens to give 11.6 V for 240 V mains in, then it will be correct, otherwise it won't. You can work out the error from that when you know your adapter's output and mains voltage.
